Burbank – Media Capital of The World

Posted by admin Comments off

Burbank is known as the “Media Capital of the World” due to the large volume of entertainment companies that call it home. Disney, ABC, NBC-Universal, Warner Brothers, Dreamworks, and myriad other media corporations are headquartered here, and one can see the influence they have in the neighborhood any time one steps out for a cup of coffee or a quick bite to eat. Writers with laptops occupy most cafes at all hours of the day, working on the next draft of their scripts, and producers meet with directors and financiers to discuss lucrative Hollywood deals over lunch at the sandwich shop where you enjoy your Grilled Reuben. Burbank’s close proximity to Hollywood (5-10 minute drive) means that its residents enjoy some peculiar perks, not the least of which is frequent invitations to free screenings of the latest Hollywood blockbusters weeks or months before their opening dates.

One recent event was the premiere of “Get Him to The Greek” held at the Greek Theater in Griffith Park, just minutes from Burbank’s Riverside Drive. Celebrities such as P. Diddy, Zac Efron, Mario Lopez, Kristen Bell, Katy Perry, comedian Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, producer Judd Apatow, and Selma Blair were all on hand for this event, and getting home to Burbank from the event was a five minute drive.  It is rare to find a place where you can go from a star-studded event to the comfort of your home in such a short drive. Burbank is where much of the magic and hubbub of Hollywood is produced, but that doesn’t negatively affect the great quality of life for its 100,000 residents who enjoy the peace that living in a small town offers while enjoying envious access to the spectacles of Hollywood entertainment.

Keisha?s Promise

Posted by admin Comments off

There was a little girl named Keisha, who lived with her mother and her father, her brothers and sister and her grandmother and grandfather, in a brown house with a picket fence that was painted orange and white.

Keisha really liked the picket fence. Every Christmas, Keisha and her grandfather would put a new coat of paint on the fence. Her grandfather teased that one day she would be too busy to help him but Keisha said, “No, Granddad. I like painting the fence with you. Until I get big and move away like Auntie Adele, I will always paint the fence with you.”

Her grandfather chuckled to himself.

One day in October, Keisha came home from school to find her mother and grandfather speaking in hushed tones at the kitchen table. Her grandfather looked very worried and her mother’s eyes were red.

Her mother looked up at Keisha and gave her a faint smile.

Her mother squeezed her grandfather’s hand to give him comfort, then took Keisha’s hand and said, “Your grandmother is in the hospital”.

Her grandmother was very sick. No one seemed to know what was wrong.

Her grandfather-who was an accountant-, spent most of each day at the hospital.

One night in late autumn, Keisha’s family received news that though her grandmother had fought very bravely, the battle was too much for her. Keisha’s grandfather tried to be cheerful but Keisha could see that he felt sad inside.

As Christmas came closer, Keisha noticed that her grandfather didn’t appear interested in collecting paint and supplies to do their annual ritual.

Keisha thought about this for a while and talked to her father about it. Then, she went to her grandfather.

“Granddad, do you have time to paint the fence with me tomorrow?”

Early the next morning Keisha went with her grandfather to get together all the brushes and other supplies they would need to paint the fence. While they worked, they laughed and joked about some of the things her grandmother used to do and around midday, Keisha noticed that some of the sadness had left her grandfather’s face.

2010 Grammy Awards Red Carpet Divas and Duds

Posted by admin Comments off

We all need our little indulgences; after some more cerebral articles, I enjoy taking potshots at celebrity fashion mishaps. Tonight we saw what the divas had for us at the 2010 Grammy Awards. I will walk you through the fashion pass and fail.

2010 seems to be the year of the breast. Heidi Klum, for instance. Is it just me or is Heidi a great looking woman with zero fashion sense? Tonight was a long-sleeved, super short number with metallic gold highlighting her scooped out cleavage. The dress really should be called a shirt. The sleeves were longer than the cuff line.
And Beyonce. I disagree with the general concensus that her dress was a fail. But again, ‘the twins’ were more out than in. Kathy Griffin’s set rested just under her chin. But worst of all was Nadeea. Her ragged black skirt looked like cobwebs and her top, if you could call it that resembled those stick on nipple tassels that strippers wore in the thirties.

Lady Ga Ga was tame, for Ga Ga. Her dress was actually a sort of dress, but it resembled an atom symbol or an unsprung Slinky. Ga Ga carried a spikey star type thing that looked lethal. Miley Cyrus’s dress looked reptilian. Fergie, another real frequent fail wore a dress that reminded me of Wonder Woman. But the coup de gras was Britney Spears, in a crepey black one piece bathing suit covered with pieces of black tulle. It looked like a cross between The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Caberet. Shaila Durcal-very, very, very colorful. Imogene Heap’s wrinked tissue dress wasn’t so bad, I mean she’s kind of an alternative singer, and the parasol was okay but I think it was broken in spots. The clincher for Imogene’s look was the curious bullet bandara or studded belt, around her neck?

My favorite dresses were Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift and Katie Perry who looked like Olympian goddesses. India Arie was positively regal. Mary J. Blige and Jennifer Nettles looked poised and stunning. Keri Hilson and Niecy Nash were sultry, flamenco gorgeous. Well there you have the 2010 Grammy Divas and Duds.

How to Become A Good Rapper

With a willingness to commit time to the craft and a little creative spark, many people can create their own high-speed poetry.

Instructions

1

Listen to other rap artists. Purchase or borrow albums by a broad variety of rappers to discover what you like in rapping. Make note of lyrical content, speed, flow and vocalizations.

2

Do vocal exercises and repeat tongue twisters. Rapping involves complex and very fast manipulations of the mouth, and it’s important to develop your voice like a muscle. You might look strange walking around saying “red leather, yellow leather” over and over again, but that’s better than a clumsy tongue if you want to rap

3

Work your voice alongside raps by artists you admire. Try to absorb the lyrics and to keep pace with the recorded music, working your way from slow to fast

4

Take stock of what you’ve learned. Make notes for yourself of what kind of rapping you enjoy, what themes you like, and anything else that strikes you about people who you think are good rappers

5

Writing Raps

Spend some time alone with a notebook. Life provides no shortage of poetical inspiration, and now it’s your turn to put it down on paper. Take your life experiences and put them into your rapping–it’s always best to write what you know. You should also keep your notebook with you–you never know when inspiration is going to strike.

6

Start thinking about beats. A number of websites offer downloads of beats either free or for a fee. You can also create your own or get a friend who beatboxes

7

Share your work. Rapping is a community experience. Rap for your friends and family and listen to their feedback. When you feel ready, you can start to rap around your neighborhood; this is where almost all rappers get their start.

8

Try your hand at freestyle (rapping without writing ahead of time). This is another part of becoming integrated into the culture of rappers. It can be intimidating, but once you’ve written a number of rhymes, you should be ready to try it. Just get together with other aspiring rappers and see what happens

9

Go to open-mike nights. Start performing where the larger community can see you. This will increase your confidence and give you some exposure

10

MOST INPORTANT

Never stop writing or working on your rhymes. You want to make sure your material is fresh and that you’re ready to share it with other people

The Top 10 Best Artists For 2009

Posted by admin Comments off

And here is our list, starting from the last tenth position:

10. Timbaland

Amazingly, Timbaland was quite absent this year. He worked with Nelly Furtado, Leona Lewis and Katy Perry on their future projects. The reason why he’s on this chart is the releasing of his second album (Shock Value 2) in December and the awesome hit Morning after dark.

9. Keri Hilson

Keri had a very successful year. She released her debut album (In a Perfect World) in March and the smashing hit Knock You Down, which topped the charts around the world.

8. Eminem

In 2009, Eminem finally released his new album- Relapse… Although it wasn’t a total success, it marked the great returning of the rapper and produced the hit We Made You.

7. Justin Bieber

I didn’t want to include the newborn pop star in my classification, but nobody can deny that he had a pretty good year. In the beginning of 2009, after Bieber had caught the attention of Usher,  he released his first single One Time (which won the hearts of millions teenage girls). Later that year, Justin also released his debut album- My World.

6. Taylor Swift

Swift had an awesome year. Her album Fearless, which produced hits like Love Story, White Horse and You Belong With me, became the best country album ever. In September, Swift won a VMA Award for best female video, which was a great success for this young country star.

5. Flo-Rida

The artist had some fantastic singles released during the year. The list includes Right Round, Sugar and Jump.

4. Ke$ ha

The commercial popularity of the star begins with the collaboration with Flo-Rida. As I already said, Right Round was a very cool song. In September came out Ke$ ha’s first solo single. Tik Tok became one of the best songs of the year.

3. David Guetta

The awesome DJ released the amazing album One Love in 2009. It included many of the hits of 2009 such as When Love Takes Over, Sexy B***h and One Love.

2. Beyonce

Beyonce had one of her best years in the industry. Single Ladies was proclaimed as the song of 2009 with one of the best videos of the year, too. Thanks to her awesome album and other amazing hits (Halo, Sweet Dreams, If I Were A Boy, Broken-Hearted Girl), she won many many awards and titles.

1. Lady Gaga

2009 was definitely the year Gaga. She didn’t win as much awards as Beyonce, but every one of her singles became a milti hit. Poker face, Lovegame, Paparazzi, Eh Eh and Bad Romance are milti hit examples. What more? Gaga impressed everyone with her crazy one-of-a-kind videos and weird outfits.

Shut Up About Lady Gaga Already!

Posted by admin Comments off

Why must we continue to talk about Lady Gaga? I mean every single day Lady Gaga this Lady Gaga that; one day Lady Gaga dresses inappropriately to a baseball game, then she gets banned from baseball games, now Seinfeld is against her. Then of course the whole drama Katy Perry started talking about music video.

Personally I do not see anything that Lady Gaga is doing that Madonna did not do 30 years ago. That much said why do we want to talk about this all over again? It must be a slow night, I think Lady Gaga surrounds herself with very talented people and is part of the music industry’s “machine”, and her outfits are fun but I don’t loose any sleep over her. I like all of her songs, I haven’t bought any of her records but I always watch her videos and listen to her work on the radio when it plays as it is great fun.

To me it’s just that fun spirit of disco when people sought pleasure wherever they could find it. A bunch of drugs, a lot of sexual activity and living in the moment as though there is no tomorrow. People want to talk about whether or not she is promiscuous and of course she says that is alone and does not do anything with anyone are you really serious? I mean does anyone really believe that, and why is anyone talking about it or even curious as to what she does in her personal life. People see the image and persona that Lady Gaga projects and they want to know what it is like to be her.

They have these perverse fantasies of wearing haute couture every day and being with whomever they feel like being with and having a good time. No doubt they would have an endless supply of money, and you would never get affected by the economy and never have to work that hard to make a living. She is like the embodiment of “Sex and the City” for a generation.  I don’t really hate Lady Gaga, just let her live and get her money while she still can and enjoy it while it is still there. People do not want to admit, but it took a minute and now the eighties is in full force. We like this empty mindless pop music more than we are willing to let on.

Would artists like Ke$ ha, or groups like Black Eyed Peas be as big as they are right now if that were not the case.  I mean if you really think about it I think every song off of every album is being turned into a single when you are talking about groups that are exploiting the dance trend of the moment. We can’t get enough of Lady Gaga, or the girl that sings “Bulletproof” or any of these other musical acts, it is never going to stop. Techno music rules the day once again and is back for its revenge!

Only The Bright Commit Suicide.

Posted by admin Comments off

Does a controversial theory linking intelligence with suicide rates help to explain why so many scientists kill themselves?

THE PAST few months have seen a series of notable suicides by scientists. Yesterday we heard details of the strange pact in which Dr Michael Griffin and his wife Adele took their lives in a Devon hotel. Two days before that, Harold Shipman killed himself. Early this month the body of Richard Stevens, a haematologist, was found in the Lake District; we await the Hutton report into the suicide of Dr David Kelly.

These are disparate cases: no one seeks to associate a mass murderer with a blameless government scientist or a troubled consultant physician. Yet these men had things in common: they were intelligent and analytical, with similar educational backgrounds. Could there be a theme that helps to explain their suicides?

Writers, psychologists and philosophers have long argued over the reasons for suicide. The problem they all face is that statistics on the subject are notoriously slippery. Take seasonal variations. Some people claim that suicide is related to climate and light, and especially to “the winter blues”. It is true that suicidal thoughts reach a peak in January (when the Samaritans get most calls). Yet in the West the peak months for actual suicide attempts are, universally, the spring and summer months of April, May and June (the only geographical exception is the Antipodes, where suicide rates peak in their late spring: November and December).

The deeper you dig, the more confusing it gets. More women claim to have depressed or suicidal feelings, yet more men commit the deed. Could it be, as some scientists argue, that this is because men are less averse to violence, even self-inflicted? There are further complexities: how do we explain the surreal fact that immediately after Marilyn Monroe’s suicide, rates of self-murder in the US rose by 12 per cent? Or that suicide attempts are most common at both extremes of the adult age range, ie, among over-65s and those in their teens and twenties? Or that suicide rates can fall dramatically when the means become less accessible (as happened in Britain when we switched from lethal coke gas to less dangerous natural gas)?

The subject is a swirl of conflicting data into which only the bravest of scientists will venture to step. One who has is Martin Voracek, a researcher at the University of Vienna Medical School. In a paper to be published in the next few months, the psychologist makes a claim that may shed some light on those suicides of scientists. His startling theory is that suicide can be positively correlated with intelligence — in other words, the smarter people are, the more likely they are to kill themselves.

Voracek’s starting point is the fact that suicide is a growing problem in the Western world: someone commits suicide in America every 15 minutes, and the World Health Organisation claims that suicide accounts for at least 2 per cent of Western deaths. The rate of suicide in parts of Sweden has risen by 250 per cent in the past 40 years.

Most sociologists have argued that this is because of the so-called anomie of modern Western life — that something in urbanised, industrialised society alienates us from friends, faith and family, the mainstays of human happiness. Voracek, though, argues that the higher rate of Western suicide could be because people are, on average, more intelligent in the Western world (and are apparently becoming more intelligent still, as worldwide average IQs rise over time — something called the Flynn effect).

To back up his theory, Voracek has taken the controversial tables of national average IQ values published recently by Professor Richard Lynn and his colleague at the University of Ulster, Tatu Vanhanen. But instead of correlating these IQ levels with national GDP per head (as, provocatively, Lynn and Vanhanen have), Voracek has compared the various IQ averages with national suicide rates.

The results are, prima facie, impressive: there is a strong correlation between suicide rates and national average IQ in most of the countries surveyed. For instance, Jamaica, with a low average IQ of 72, has suicide rates of 0.5 for men and 0.2 for women (all suicide figures are per 100,000 person-years). Albania, with an average IQ of 90, has low suicide rates of 2.9 and 1.7. Germany by contrast, with its average IQ of 102, has suicide rates of 21.8 and 8.3; Japan, with an average IQ of 105, has suicide rates of 25 and 12.

Wherever you look, and whatever the culture, the same pattern can be seen: in Azerbaijan, Greece, Kuwait and Chile there are lower average IQ levels and lower suicide rates; in Austria, Korea, Singapore and Norway there are higher average IQ levels and higher suicide rates. One exception is the UK, with a relatively high average IQ (100) and a relatively low (at least for the West) suicide rate — 11 for men and 3.3 for women.

The obvious objection to these statistics is that suicide rates still have nothing to do with brains and everything to do with industrialisation, affluence and modernity — that advanced capitalist societies are less nurturing of the troubled soul. Yet Voracek insists that he has “partialed out” the variables of wealth, rate of divorce, unemployment and average age. He says that even when you make these factors statistically irrelevant, there is still a correlation between national IQ and the rate of self-murder.

Voracek also cites something called the Terman Genetic Study of Genius. This was a study of the entire life cycles of 1,528 gifted Californian children born in 1920-21. One of many fascinating facts revealed by the Terman study was that the suicide rate among these super-bright individuals was 33 per 100,000 person-years — about three times the average rate for the US (which is, anyway, fairly high on a global ranking).

So why should there be such an apparently strong connection between intelligence and suicide? Voracek points to a 1981 study by Denys deCatanzaro, a Canadian evolutionary psychologist. In his research, deCatanzaro posited the idea that for suicide to take place, a certain threshold of self-awareness, of intelligence, must be crossed. Such higher intelligence could only be human, hence the rarity if not impossibility of animal “suicide”.

DeCatanzaro went on to suggest that from an evolutionary perspective — excepting certain religious beliefs and military scenarios — almost the only time it could make Darwinian “sense” for someone to commit suicide was when they became aware, or wrongly convinced, that they were probably not going to have more or any children, and/or that they were becoming a burden to kin who might otherwise go on to have children.

It is a reductionist viewpoint but a powerful one — and using these concepts, Voracek wonders whether anyone who can achieve such a critical and lucid self-analysis is simply more likely to be smart.

But deCatanzaro, though he has yet to read Voracek’s paper, rejects the Voracek theory. For a start, the Canadian thinks that comparative IQ studies such as those of Lynn and Vanhanen are clumsy and “could be viewed as racist”.

DeCatanzaro believes instead that suicide-rate differentials are explainable by — yes — modernity and industrialisation. He adds that there are, anyway, huge problems with national suicide-rate comparisons because the methods and reliability of data collection are so different. Authorities in Roman Catholic countries, for example, are loath to condemn anyone to Hell for the mortal sin of self-murder; hence, perhaps, the low rates of recorded suicide in Latin America.

In this argument deCatanzaro is backed up by Dr Rory O’Connor, senior lecturer in health psychology at the University of Stirling and head of its suicidal behaviour research group.

Dr O’Connor likewise rejects the intelligence/suicide thesis, and also cites the case of Roman Catholicism. “Look at Ireland,” says O’Connor. “Suicide rates have exploded there in the past 40 years. In part this is because suicide has got more common, but even more important is the fact that the manner of recording suicide has changed, has become more assiduous, and this is because the religious culture has changed. Voracek’s thinking is very problematic. Suicide is multi-factorial.”

Yet there is some support for Voracek’s suicide/smartness correlation. Dr Keith Ashcroft, a forensic psychologist based in Manchester, notes that “suicide is indeed more common among the professional classes: scientists like vets and dentists have notoriously high suicide rates”.

In fact, Ashcroft has a telling theory of his own. He thinks that “emotional intelligence” is relevant tothe IQ/suicide question. Ashcroft wonders whether people with very high IQs might tend to have lower emotional intelligence — ie, inferior “people skills”. After all, everyone is aware of the cliché of the lonely genius, unable to fit in with society, who is eventually driven to suicide by his isolation.

It is certainly a plausible image. But given the swirl of conflicting facts, and the sensitivities of the entire subject, perhaps the only thing we should say assuredly is that we need a lot more research.

Best Rap Songs of All Time – Top 20 Greatest Hip Hop Tracks Ever Recorded

Posted by admin Comments off

Coming up with a list of the top 20 best rap songs of all time is guaranteed to spark some controversy. People are passionate about music, and few things in life inspire more raw emotion in our lives than listening to our favorite songs. With that in mind I’ve tried to remain as objective as possible in crafting this list of the best hip hop songs ever, but my own biases have no doubt slipped in. Feel free to roundly criticize my choices in comments. Here are my picks for the greatest rap and hip hop songs of all time:

20 – MC Lyte – I Cram To Understand U – Yes there are plenty of great female rappers and I can’t think of a more appropriate choice than MC Lyte to kick off this list. Widely considered to be the best female rapper ever, MC Lyte, rapping since 1988, has helped pave the way for female rappers for more than 2 decades. Though she has recorded 9 studio albums to date, many consider her debut album Lyte as a Rock to be her best, and any of I Cram To Understand U, 10% Dis or Paper Thin could have made this list. Truly one of the most talented artists, male or female, in rap music history.

19 – Ice T – Colors – Though he spends most of his time acting these days on Law & Order: SVU, Ice T helped pioneer the sub-genre of gangsta rap back in the late 80s. Though his lyrics might not have been as coarse or as controversial as though provided by groups like NWA, they still provoked controversy, and Ice T drew plenty of fire from critics over the years. Most of Ice T’s music was too dark for conventional radio, but his title song from the soundtrack of the 1988 movie Colors did gain him some mainstream exposure. The song, like the movie, delved into racial tensions and gang life, and is in my opinion this talented actor and rapper’s best work to date.

18 – Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg – Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang – Dr. Dre’s fingerprints are all over many of the rappers on this list, so it only seems fitting this hip hop superstar should have one of his own tracks on the list. From the groundbreaking album The Chronic this song also featured the work of Snoop Dogg and was the springboard for his own superstardom.

17 – Bone Thugs-n-Harmony – Tha Crossroads – Dedicated to deceased rapper Easy-E Tha Crossroads is the best work of this hip hop supergroup. The song not only went to #1 for 9 weeks, but it sold over 2 million copies and nabbed the group a Grammy to boot.

16 – Eric B. & Rakim – Lyrics of Fury – With their incredible poetic talent it is little surprise that this group shows up again on this list of the greatest rap songs ever. This group was so far ahead of their time that none of the tracks off their 1988 album Follow the Leader even made a blip on the charts, yet these days the album is considered one of the most groundbreaking hip hop records of all time. The whole album is great, and it is tough to pick just one song to represent it, but Lyrics of Fury is my favorite Eric B. & Rakim song so it gets the nod.

15 – 2Pac – Dear Mama – A song dedicated by his mom, this classic track is considered by many contemporary artists as one of the best hip hop songs ever recorded, and rap superstar Eminem in the past declared it his favorite song. Dear Mama showed the emotional depth that the hard-bitten rapper was capable of, and its powerful lyrics are certain to touch the soul of every music lover whether they are a fan of the genre or not.

14 – Notorious B.I.G. – Juicy – The best Biggie Smalls song in my opinion, Juicy was the debut single of Biggie’s 1994 album Ready to Die. The song, produced by P. Diddy, details Biggie’s rise from a life of poverty to a rap superstar. Though it might not have lit up the charts the song is considered by many long time hip hop songs as one of the true anthems of the genre.

13 – N.W.A. – Straight Outta Compton – Talk about stirring up controversy, few groups in any genre did it as well as N.W.A.. Featuring Easy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and MC Ren the group would go on to spawn some of the greatest solo acts in rap music. Considered to be the best gangsta rap group of all time, N.W.A. sparked plenty of controversy with their foul language on their albums as well as their racially charged lyrics, particularly targeting police officers, and they were banned from play on several U.S. radio stations, and no doubt many teenage kids had albums taken away by shocked parents. Straight Outta Compton is their best song from their multi-platinum album of the same name, and though the group split following 1991 they remain to this day as one of the greatest pioneers of the rap music scene.

12 – Nas – The World Is Yours – Looking back I probably should have found a way to squeeze at least a couple more Nas songs on this list. This incredible hip hop artist has been consistently cranking out hits for the past 15 years, and almost every fan of rap music has this guy listed at or near the top of their favorite rappers. Like many other rappers, Nas did some of his best work on his debut album, and in my opinion The World Is Yours is the best song from his debut record Illmatic.

11 – Beastie Boys – Sabotage – Bring on the Beastie Boys haters again. I expect a deluge of negative comments for rating this song at #11 all time. Yes, with its rock track it barely resembles a hip hop song, yet since I am writing this piece I get to bend the rules to suit my will from time to time. From the album Ill Communication this song would sit comfortably atop a list of the top 10 Beastie Boys songs, and the accompanying music video is one of the all time classics. Though it is now 15 years old this is a song you just don’t get tired of. Even video game producers agree apparently as Sabotage has showed up in both Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Rock Band.

10 – Pete Rock & CL Smooth – They Reminisce Over You – Finally we get to the top 10 rap songs of all time, and the meat of this list. They Reminisce Over You or T.R.O.Y. is another one of those songs that didn’t make a big splash in the year of its release but has since gone on to become recognized as one of the greatest songs of the genre. If you haven’t heard this song, dial it up on You Tube. You won’t believe what you’re missing.

9 – 2Pac – Changes – Some might object to Changes in a higher spot than Dear Mama and again it comes down to personal preference. Sampling from The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby and the Range Changes actually wasn’t released until after 2Pac’s death and when it earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance it became the first rap song to ever earn its artist a posthumous nomination.

8 – Nas – One Mic – Though there might not be enough Nas songs on this list at least the ones that made it have high spots. In my opinion this hard hitting track from the album Stillmatic is his best song. Listen carefully and you’ll catch a sample of Phil Collins’ In The Air Tonight.

7 – Ice Cube – It Was a Good Day – The Predator ranks right up there as one of my favorite rap albums so you’ll have to excuse me if I indulge myself a little and give this spectacular track a spot in the top 10 hip hop songs. When N.W.A. split and went on to solo careers I was initially disappointed, but with the release of this album all my doubts were erased.

6 – Eminem – Lose Yourself – The best Eminem song, in my opinion, and one of the most inspiring songs in any genre. If listening to this inspirational track from the movie 8 Mile doesn’t get your blood pumping and ready to take on the world then you might want to check your pulse to make sure it is still there. Though it might lack the lyrical genius of song of Shady’s other songs overall it is his best work to date.

5 – Common – I Used To Love H.E.R. – Despite this song is in the top 5 rap songs I’m willing to bet there will still be commenters who will criticize me for ranking it too low. I can’t count the number of people I know who name this their favorite hip hop song of all time. A rapper and an R&B artist Common has scored two Grammys for his work to date, and has shown he is multitalented, landing several acting roles in films like Terminator Salvation, Smokin’ Aces and Street Kings. For those who will argue I do think this song is as good or better than any other on the list, and the ones that finished ahead of it did so due to their groundbreaking nature in hip hop.

4 – Run DMC – King of Rock – Another rap group that should have appeared more times on this list Run DMC was the reason rap crossed over from the underground to mainstream music, and went on to become a major genre rather than just a fad. MTV declared them the greatest hip hop group of all time, and they recently were deserved inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

3 – Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five – The Message – Though certainly not as prolific as Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were among the first to bring the music of the New York street scene to public consciousness. Though few have probably heard their work they were an inspiration to the other artists that would eventual gain enough momentum to popularize the genre.

2 – Public Enemy – Fight the Power – Though many of the songs on this list are pure entertainment for Public Enemy rap music was the perfect platform to deliver their message. After gaining notoriety with their first two albums Yo! Bum Rush the Show and It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back PE really hit the big time with their 1990 album Fear of a Black Planet. Hard-hitting and racially charged the album remains one of the most critically acclaimed hip hop albums of all time, and Fight the Power its signature song, is a classic rap anthem.

1 – The Sugarhill Gang – Rapper’s Delight – Though they do not have the resume of many other artists on this list of the top 20 best rap songs of all time, The Sugarhill Gang have the distinction of recording the first ever hip hop song to crack the top 40 on the mainstream Billboard charts, reaching as high as #36 way back in 1979. With virtually no radio play, rap and hip hop only existed as a form of street music back in the 70s and this one hit wonder helped launched the genre that has generated so many billions of dollars in album sales for artists to date.

Katy Perry – Firework

Lyrics of firework

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting throught the wind
Wanting to start again

Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards
One blow from caving in

Do you ever feel already buried deep
Six feet under scream
But no one seems to hear a thing

Do you know that tehre’s still a chance for you
Cause there’s a spark in you

You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on show ‘em what your worth
Make ‘em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby you’re a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make ‘em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
You’re gunna leave ‘em fallin’ down-own-own

You don’t have to feel like a waste of space
You’re original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

Maybe you’re reason why all the doors are closed
So you can open one that leads you to the perfect road

Like a lightning bolt, your heart will blow
And when it’s time, you’ll know

You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on show ‘em what your worth
Make ‘em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby you’re a firework
Come on slet your colors burst
Make ‘em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
You’re gunna leave ‘em fallin’ down-own-own

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It’s always been inside of you, you, you
And now it’s time to let it through

Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on show ‘em what your worth
Make ‘em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby you’re a firework
Come on slet your colors burst
Make ‘em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
You’re gunna leave ‘em goin “Oh, oh, oh!”

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

About the Artist

A former Christian artist, Katy Perry rebranded herself as a larger-than-life pop star and rose to prominence during the summer of 2008. Before she topped the charts with songs like “I Kissed a Girl” and “California Gurls,” though, she spent the better part of a decade recording music under a different name. Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (or Katy Hudson, as she billed herself on her 2001 gospel album) was born on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, CA. Raised in a religious household as the daughter of two pastors, she was forbidden to listen to secular bands as a child, although a childhood slumber party introduced her to the music of Alanis Morissette and Freddie Mercury. Religious music remained at the forefront, however, and Katy released a self-titled Christian album in 2001 under her original name. She would later abandon the genre (and her given surname) in favor of a pop career.

At age 17, she began working with hitmaker Glen Ballard, who had produced and co-written Alanis Morissette’s chart-topping Jagged Little Pill in 1995. Several years later, she teamed up with the Matrix, a Grammy-nominated production/songwriting team whose rsum included collaborations with Avril Lavigne, Shakira, and Korn. Tired of producing music for other artists, the Matrix had plans to record an album of their own, with Perry serving as one of the group’s two singers. The project was ultimately shelved, but not before Perry appeared in a 2004 write-up by Blender magazine, who hailed her as “the Next Big Thing!”

With the Matrix’s unreleased album sitting in the vaults at Sony Records, Perry went back to the drawing board and began working on a solo album for Columbia. The project was eventually canceled, although two of its songs were later given to Kelly Clarkson, who scored a Top 40 hit with “I Do Not Hook Up” several years later. Perry (who, by this point, had shed her original surname due to its similarity to actress Kate Hudson) then signed with Capitol, who encouraged their new client to write her own music and helped establish her image as a boisterous, tongue-in-cheek pop star. Perry’s debut single, “UR So Gay,” generated a small buzz with its mischievous lyrics and clever music video, but it was “I Kissed a Girl” that proved to be her breakthrough hit, topping the charts in 20 countries and pushing its accompanying album, 2008′s One of the Boys, into the Top Ten in America. Perry supported her debut by joining the Warped Tour that summer, where she toured alongside her boyfriend at the time, Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes. Meanwhile, “Hot N Cold” became her second multiplatinum hit, “Thinking of You” (one of the album’s three songs written solely by Perry) cracked the Top 40, and “Waking Up in Vegas” cracked the Top Ten.

Such success meant that Katy Perry had officially become one of the industry’s biggest pop stars, celebrated as much for her outsized behavior and outrageous fashion choices as the music itself. She continued touring through the summer of 2009 (albeit without McCoy, whose boyfriend status had been revoked earlier that year) and found time to tape an installment of MTV Unplugged, which was released in November. Meanwhile, she worked on a new album and started up a whirlwind romance with comedian Russell Brand, eventually becoming his fianc. Recording sessions for her album wrapped up in early 2010, and Perry scored her second number one single with California Gurls, which was released that May. The accompanying album, Teenage Dream, followed in August. Andrew Leahey, Rovi.
